ICT

The QEGS ICT network has expanded dramatically in recent years. In addition to a large number of networked PCs, the network infrastructure used to connect the equipment has been substantially upgraded. Pupils and staff can now access the network using the latest versions of Microsoft Office software and be confident that work saved at home or at School can be opened for presentations made on any computer in classrooms or in an ICT suite.

Using modern, high-speed switching devices and managed software solutions, the ICT network links every building in the school. There are a large number of suites of networked PCs and six subject-specific suites available for use by pupils and students in Early Years, Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form.

Facilities in the majority of classrooms include interactive whiteboard technology linked to networked multimedia computers with the latest audio visual equipment enhancing the learning experience. Current developments include supporting sixth form students in accessing network resources via personal computers, laptops and mobile phones, development of a managed wireless solution and testing the new Kaleidos Virtual Learning Platform.

The school network has more than 250 network stations running Windows ICT facilities in the Maths classroom blockXP Professional, Microsoft Office applications and a wide selection of subject-specific software and industry standard software. From Computer Aided Design in Design Technology to editing digital photographs in Art, the network is fully used by all departments in teaching and learning.

The network is available to pupils at times when the suites are not being used for timetabled lessons. In addition, the school Library and most departments have developed substantial ICT resources for learning. In addition, all network stations allow pupils access to the Internet (with appropriate safeguards), email and virtual CD-ROMs. Soon, pupils will also be able to access QEGS learning resources from computers with Internet connections at home.

The ICT Department has a variety of resources comprising digital projectors, digital cameras, digital video cameras, scanners and various types of printer including a large format colour printer and a networked colour laser printer. All resources are available for all departments to use in addition to the ICT facilities that are available in teaching rooms.
