Financial assistance, including scholarships and bursaries

The school is committed to retaining social diversity and enabling wherever possible suitably qualified pupils to benefit from the education we offer, whatever their background.  Thus a number of means-tested bursaries are available.  In addition to these, we are always keen to encourage the siblings of current pupils to come to QEGS and we offer discounts to the usual tuition fees in such cases.

Just to be clear, generally speaking a bursary is assistance with fees, set at an appropriate level after the financial circumstances of the applicant’s family have been assessed.  Scholarships, traditionally, are awarded solely on academic merit and this remains the case for our John Law Scholarship, awarded at 11+ entry.  The Sixth Form scholarships for science (the Ogden Trust Scholarship) and languages (the Blakey Scholarship) both require high academic achievement, but are awarded on a means-tested basis.  For more details on these awards, please see below.

Bursaries:

While Bursary funds are not unlimited, we are as generous as we can be within reason, and some of our bursaries, thanks to help from external agencies, extend right up to 100%. Our guiding principle is to provide assistance to students with proven ability whose parents have a demonstrable need.

As a rough guide, an upper limit of £45,000 in parents' gross annual income is the level beyond which bursary assistance would not normally be considered. If there is any doubt, it is always worth parents contacting us to see what we might be able to do to help.

Scholarships:
The John Law Scholarship, valued at up to one-third remission of fees, is awarded to the best qualified new entrant at age 11+, based on performance in the Senior School Entrance Examination.

Sixth Form entrants joining QEGS in 2010 who have previously been educated in the state sector have the opportunity to apply for a special Sixth Form Science Scholarship worth up to 100% of fees, which we are able to offer with the support of the Ogden Trust. This is specifically for a high-achieving student wishing to take Mathematics and Physics at A level and beyond.

The third scholarship available is the Blakey Sixth Form Language Scholarship, offered on a means-tested basis to a student who is taking one or more modern languages (including English) at A level at QEGS.

For further details of all scholarships, please contact Mr Phil Lloyd, the school's Development Director, on 01254 686307.
