Junior School
The Junior School, located in a distinct yet integral part of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, delivers an enhanced and enriched National Curriculum in a caring and supportive environment. Every pupil is encouraged to discover and develop the range of gifts and qualities he or she possesses.
Emphasis is placed upon pastoral care. This is not only the responsibility of the staff but is also included in the role of the Junior School Prefects. Happy children learn and achieve their academic potential while growing physically, socially and morally. We aim to provide a broad education which develops the whole child and celebrates their many and varied accomplishments. Once per cycle there is an Achievement Assembly when credit certificates are awarded for academic excellence and star badges for personal qualities.
Teaching methods blend individual, group and class tuition with the added benefit of small class sizes. The timetable includes: Numeracy, Literacy, Science, ICT, History, Geography, Religious Education, Design Technology, Music, Drama, French, Complementary Studies and Physical Education. The latter includes swimming throughout the year in QEGS swimming pool. Due to our close links with the Senior School some of these subjects are taught by Senior School staff thus enhancing ease of transfer at 11+.
The Junior School has its own specialist rooms where pupils are timetabled for specific subjects. The library recently refurbished with the generoushelp of the parents's association, provides a rich literary diet encompassing both fiction and non fiction and is efficiently run by the Year 6 librarians. The Art room promotes the children’s creative talents whilst the Science room, also recently refurbished, encourages enquiry and investigation. Our boys and girls also make good use of the Junior School ICT suite and thus achieve a high level of skill in this area.
There is a healthy tradition of excellence in music and in addition we offer specialist individual tuition for those wishing to pursue their studies of a particular instrument. Drama features strongly in the curriculum too, the splendid results of which can be seen in our productions. Numerous sporting opportunities are provided and we regularly challenge other schools both locally and nationally.
At Queen Elizabeth’s we foster close links between home and school. There are Parents’ Evenings, Open Days and special events within the academic year. Upon request, meetings can be arranged with individual members of staff.
Children from our Early Years Department naturally progress into the Junior School. Other boys and girls wishing to join us in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 may do so by means of an entrance examination appropriate to their age. Applications for entry are welcome at any time and our aim is to give all the boys and girls who join our school a "flying start".
